The Institute for Human Rights is a research institute founded in 1985, and is situated in the Faculty of social sciences, business and economics at Åbo Akademi University.Its principal aim is to promote research, provide education and disseminate information relating to the protection of human rights.

The Institute has a long experience in organising human rights courses of high standards. A Master's Degree Programme in International Human Rights Law was introduced in the fall of 2006. The activities of the Institute are financed partly through the University's budget and partly through project-based external funding. Under the directorship of Professor Elina Pirjatanniemi, the Institute operates with a number of in-house and visiting scholars specialising in the area of human rights.
